Granted, this isn’t the most exiting vintage Japanese car you can spot, but it is a big step in the correct direction! This Celica was not in the top 10 of most wanted spots in my little black book, but it is close enough to really excite me. I seldom see a really old Asian car in the Netherlands, so to run into this car is very good news! And to get from a Corvette C6 to this car within a hour, and within 2 km, well, it can get better than this, but not easily
Oke, oke, it is a bit a let-down that this car is a Celica, not really a name that makes my heart beat faster. Oh well, I like this car! The engine was designed in 1967, it is an unique 1600cc engine with Twin overhead valve shafts and center positioned spark plugs. An engine that made this car competitive, especially the more expensive models, even for today’s standards. The car has a apparently famous bullet proof close ratio 5spd gearbox (The first mass produced 5spd). The light and nimble 940kg coupe with it’s 115hp would launch of any lights and be at 100km/h in just over 7 sec. It’s top speed being 215km/h. It is easy to see where the Supra came from
What a day. And I am not even home yet! What will the car gods have in stock for me next?

I like this car. Again, Japan gave loads of warnings and the European and American manufacturers simply did not pick it up.
