Opel Ascona A

July 30th, 2007 by Rolph · No Comments

While walking to the supermarket, I ran into this rustbucket, and I just had to take some pictures. This old Ascona brings back memories of football trips on backseats of your teammates fathers, on rainy saturday mornings… This one’s severely beaten, as the pictures show. Got to love those rims, though čśë

This is actually quite a nice Ascona, as it is a early model! I know, it could have fooled me too, hiding behind all the plaster and rust, but mind you: this is a first model of the Ascona! An Opel Ascona 1.6 A, to be exact, build somewhere between 1970 and 1975. That is, the model A… This car is probably one of the first Ascona’s ever build! The silvery grating is typical for the first halve year of production, to be changed to black ones since then… The nice and shiny chrome bumpers: after 1972: replaced by ugly half-rubbery ones. Another special feature: it’s roof. This car has a steel roof! So, what is so special about that, I hear you think? (I thought the same, actually). Well, apparently, back in the days, it was customary to finish cars of with a sort of leathery black roof. Legend has it, that this was an invention of the car companies to prevent damage in shipping. In those days, sailors were accustomed to take on-board shortcuts over cartops… And the fake leather was a cheap and effective solution to all this. Brilliant marketing, of course, have your car bubble-wrapped for shipping and charge extra dollars by claiming it is a fashion statement čśë Oh well, this rustbucket is packed with a 60 to 80 hp engine, I don’t know, it depends whether it has a ‘n’ or ‘s’ engine. A staggering 692.000 Ascona’s have been build. In autumn 1970 the Adam Opel AG in R├╝sselsheim presented a new model range (internal project code 1450), to be inserted seamless between the existing model ranges Kadett and Rekord. Initial the first Ascona should be produced as a Kadett C as the following two pilot run studies from the year 1968 occupy, who were still designated as Kadett. Since at the same time the rival firm Ford presented the opulent proportioned Taunus, which otherwisely should have had no competitor of R├╝sselsheim and in addition to this Bob Lutz of Opel had pleaded for the introduction of a new model range. So an independent model range named Ascona was born. And here’s what left of it!
