You don’t expect a nice and special car on a location like, say, a land fill or garbage dump. Well, I spot this funny Volkswagen on a garbage recycling and disposal area in the city I live. For some reason, I have fond memories of these boxy VW’s, but oddly enough can’t I recall a single memory with a car like this. Something vague and blurry, somewere on holiday in the south of France when I was a young boy, but nothing explicit. Normally, I remember some scene or situation. Oh well, not me, not with this car, but I like it anyway. Granted, I like the somewhat older versions better, but still, it is nice to look at.

This car is a direct descendant from the German army vehicle VW Type 82 Kübelwagen. It has a wide range of names, it is called a Trekker, a Safari, or The Thing. It looks funny enough to have names like that, but why not settle for one?! The doors are removable without tools, and the windshields fold down, similar to a Jeep. In fact, this car was designed to be the European counterpart of the Jeep.

Of course, since it has been around since the sixties, some older, more rusting examples are available to spot as well…

I simply know too little about these cars to mention interesting facts. Wikipedia is quite up to spec, if you want the details. All I can say is that the cars look like fun to have, I really can appreciate the form follows function cars like this.

There are a coupler of manufacturers like SIKU who made a toycar out of it. Maybe that’s the memory? By the way, it’s in my opinion not exactly a descendant from the Kübel…
