Ford Mustang II (1974-78)

Normally, I really like the old ‘Stangs, but this pony is not worth getting excited about… Brrr! Granted, it weren’t the best of times for a car to be born, but still. This is a sad derivative from the original Mustang! I am probably offending quite some hardcore Mustang lovers, but I can’t help it. As a car, this design isn’t really appalling, but as a Mustang, this is horrible! 🙂

Dubbed “Little Jewel” by Lee Iacocca himself, the Mustang II was a project spearheaded by the Mustang’s original creator. Iacocca believed that the Mustang had strayed too far from its original concept, so a completely redesigned Mustang was in order for 1974. Like the car that preceded it, the Mustang II had its roots in another compact, the Ford Pinto (though less so than the original car was based on the Falcon). The car sold well, with sales of more than 400,000 units the first year. It is worth noting that four of the five years of the Mustang II are on the top-ten list of most-sold Mustangs. The Mustang II featured innovations such as rack-and-pinion steering and a separate engine sub-frame that greatly decreased noise, vibration, and harshness.

And I ran into a nice scan of the original Ford Mustang II brochure, here are some of the nice bits: Well, they are in the above gallery nowadays…

Great looking interiors! Very fancy, I must admit. The only worrying thing is the dog in the back of the car on page two… poor little bugger, let’s hope they didn’t really think you could transport a dog that size in a closed boot of this car.

Well, as a car, it is not all bad, but it certainly is not worthy of the name Mustang IMHO… I have a Camaro on this site as well, and I do like that car!

I can’t find it, could you link it?

Well, strangely enough, I could not find it either. Even Google did not help out… A quick browse in the picture database gave me some nice feedback: I wasn’t delirious, I indeed HAD uploaded the Camaro pictures. Some nice browsing through the site later, I find the Camaro in this post:

on the bright side, I got to view lots and lots of nice cars which I have spotted over the last months, some really nice ones as well! How easily forgotten, once you spot something new… 😉
